19.The Islands, A Dreadful Ferry, and Warm Showers
We’ve changed our plans again... Just kidding!
As promised we started the week by taking a few days off the bikes and relaxing on the islands. This gave us a chance to reflect on the past couple of months but also made us contemplate the type of travel that we are doing and our own place within tourism. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are obviously both very touristic in different ways and this caused me some anxiety being surrounded by large tourist crowds and a very different Thailand that I had started to get used to. On the other hand, Bianca was the opposite – finding it very relaxing being on the islands, close to the water and really soaking in the chilled vibe that invariably comes with tropical islands. We got to indulge in some things we simply haven’t had the chance to very often (if at all). We booked a hotel with a pool – I immediately got sunburnt. To be fair, I was in the shade for about 2 hours and the sun for about 4 minutes, so I should have known this was coming.
We had European style breakfasts, Mexican food for lunch, the odd cocktail; hello rich people! We also had the chance to do some indoor rock climbing for the first time since the trip started, something we both enjoyed weekly before leaving. And you’ll all be pleased to know that all muscle tone in our arms has completely atrophied. The quads may be strong from cycling, but the arms are weak like chicken!
The main reason for coming to the islands of course, other than resting, was to do some more diving. Although this is shoulder season, it is a premier spot for diving in SE Asia and one of the best places to spot whale sharks. Sadly, we didn’t get to see one of the big bastards this time. But, what we did get to see was enormous schools of fish, more than either of us have ever seen while diving. It was memorable. The other thing we both commented on after surfacing was the size of some of the fish. Lots of familiar species we have seen before were present, but most seemed 20-50% larger than normal. Very cool. This may be our last opportunity to dive for sometime, so we had to make the most of it. Even though no whale sharks were spotted, it was a lot of fun and I’m glad we did it.
The other thing we have been oh so grateful for over the last week has been a couple of lovely donations! A really big thank you to Sarah and Bron. It was so nice to receive and this was definitely put to good use on the islands for the aforementioned Mexican feasts and European breakfasts! 😊 Honestly, you don’t realise how special it makes us feel! If anyone else feels like making us smile then you can find the link at the bottom of this page. This would be the place I should drop the hint about Thai massages being a real luxury in Bangkok :P
Now the moment I know a lot of you have been waiting for. Many of you will have skim read the first part, just waiting and hoping for me to talk about this absolute travel gold. The night ferry. We were faced with two options to leave the islands and return to the mainland; £18 per person (with bike) 2 hour catamaran journey, OR £18 per person (with bike) 6 hour night ferry. The benefit of course of the night ferry is that you don’t need to sort accommodation out! So naturally we jumped straight back in for a night ferry experience. How could we choose anything else after the joy of last time! Well, it started out quite good. Dare I say it, anticlimactic. We sorted the bikes on the lower deck and were led up to a sleeping area (luxury!). Ok, it was 50 bunk beds in one giant room. Ok, by beds, I mean, a 3cm mattress and a pillow that makes bricks look forgiving. But a bed! The room even had AC! They seriously undercharged for this ferry! We came prepared, we had ear plugs, Bianca had her eye mask. We boarded early (8pm) and the ferry was supposed to arrive at 5am. We were ready to get minimum 6 hours sleep. A three year old child and his incredibly attentive parents became the opponent to this goal. I’m going to be honest here. We have had so many wins on this trip, we have been shown incredible kindness and hospitality, people have shown us the absolute best of humanity. We are winners. We lost this battle. It didn’t help that the ship itself blared an announcement that we were arriving at port at 3.30am. It was certainly less than helpful that the toddler cried non-stop for 60min stretches on multiple occasions. I would say optimistically I got 3.5 hours sleep. Bianca probably got 3 max.
What a perfect preparation for a cycling trip in tropical heat! We ended up, somehow, doing 100km that day. We really are stupid sometimes. Somehow this week we have ended up doing around 300km still, despite the time off. We should be in Bangkok by Thursday and, on a sadder note, this will probably be a bit of a goodbye to the coast and sea for a good while. After Bangkok we will be going north east towards Laos, before turning south into Cambodia. There is a chance we actually don’t see the ocean until Christmas… can you believe that?
Yesterday, we had the absolute pleasure of staying with another Warm Showers host. Malcolm and Maya (expats/immigrants), were awesome. They cycled out to meet us south of their town (Prachuap Khiri Khan). We also ran into their mate, Liam – who very generously got us some snacks right off the bat! We then all cycled up the coast, stopping at a nice coffee shop, just as a downpour struck, with that successfully dodged, we continued on up to a Thai air force base, they showed us some incredibly cute monkeys, the beautiful coastline, a ridiculous seafood restaurant (more to come), a stupidly cheap gourmet ice cream parlour and then finally, their lovely house. What a brilliant day. Could it get better? Well, Maya is a masseuse and worked some magic on our arms and shoulder in particular, which really had not taken a liking to the fact we wanted to do some rock climbing again followed by consecutive riding days. We shared some beers, some amazing blue cheese (fuck me we missed proper cheese!), and most importantly, good company and some yarns. It was much needed. I’ll say it again – the cycle touring community is bloody top notch.
Right, finally, let’s keep some of the culinary experiences rolling;
Oyster parts – don’t ask me about the translation, or indeed what it is. It has oysters in it, so I ordered it. It was weirdly gelatinous, but surprisingly tasty. Give this a go.
Glass noodle seafood salad – just yes. Seafood along the coast, who would have thought that was good? Well, it is. And the Thai do Thai things to it – chilli, fish sauce, lime, coriander if you are lucky. Get in my belly!
Coconut soup – it tastes better than it sounds if that is possible. A lot of lemongrass, lime juice, coconut milk and then veggies and whatever protein you want. Unheard of in these parts - it isn’t spicy!
Finally, the monsoon has caught us! Today, we prepared to
cycle out of Malcolm and Maya’s place and it was bucketing down. We did what intrepid
adventurer would do when faced with this situation. We waited in the dry
shelter for it to pass. Sure enough, the worst of it did! The heavy rains often are done pretty quickly.
Twenty minutes later, we set off in tropical drizzle. One could say we left our
Warm Showers hosts into warm showers. It drizzled a lot of the day, with some
patches of sun and some patches of bucketing down… we dodged another of these
by making a strategic coffee shop break. I can’t say we fully missed the
weather today, like we have over much of the last few weeks, but we didn’t get
absolutely soaked… And Bangkok is supposed to be where it shifts. So a few more
days to dodge and we can look forward to clear skies.

VERSÃO EM PORTUGUÊS
19. As ilhas, uma balsa pavorosa e banhos quentes
Mudamos nossos planos de novo... Brincadeira!
A Bianca, provavelmente, dormiu no máximo 3 horas.
Vale a pena experimentar.
